Erectile Dysfunction and Its Link to Heart Disease

April 28, 2023

Erectile Dynfunction
Gentlemen, it may come as a surprise to you but erectile dysfunction may be a symptom of something far worse. So,  let’s take a moment to talk about your heart health. Did you know that heart disease is the leading cause of death for men in the United States? It kills almost 400,000 men in 2020 alone. The good news is that there are steps you can take to reduce your risk of heart disease and live a healthier life.

The Link Between Erectile Dysfunction and Heart Disease

One of the leading symptoms of heart disease in men is erectile dysfunction (ED). Do you wake up with an erection at least five out of seven days a week? If not you should have a heart check and comprehensive physical exam. ED can be an early warning sign of heart disease because the same factors that contribute to the development of cardiovascular disease can also lead to ED.

What Should I Look For?

ED could be an indicator for heart disease because the same factors that contribute to the development of cardiovascular disease can also lead to ED. When the arteries in the body become narrowed or blocked due to a buildup of plaque, it can affect blood flow to the penis, making it difficult to achieve or maintain an erection. This same process of plaque buildup in the arteries, known as atherosclerosis, can also lead to blockages in the coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart, leading to heart disease.

Erectile Dysfunction is an Early Warning Sign of Heart Disease

In fact, ED can occur up to three years before symptoms of heart disease develop, making it a potential early warning sign for men who may be at risk for cardiovascular disease. Therefore, if a man experiences ED, it is important to discuss it with a healthcare provider to determine if further testing and evaluation for heart disease is necessary.

Heart Disease is Not Just One Thing

Remember, heart disease is an umbrella term that encompasses many related conditions affecting your heart health. These include coronary artery disease, abnormal heart rhythms, heart failure, heart valve disease, congenital heart disease, cardiomyopathy, pericardial disease, aorta disease, Marfan syndrome, and vascular disease.
